‘Star of Pure Land’ Enters Global Record As World’s Largest Purple Star Sapphire

The Star of Pure Land, a GIA-certified natural purple star sapphire and the world's largest documented specimen of its kind, was formally introduced into the global scientific and cultural record at a dedicated briefing held yesterday in Colombo.

Weighing 3,536 carats, the gemstone has been independently examined and verified in accordance with internationally recognized gemological standards.

Certification by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) confirms its authenticity, natural and unheated formation, and rare optical characteristics.

Its classification and Sri Lankan (Ceylon) origin have been independently documented by the Lanka Gemological Laboratory (LGL).

Consultant gemologist Ashan Amarasinghe noted at the briefing that the round-shaped gem named “Star of Pure Land” is the world’s largest documented natural purple star sapphire

He added, "This is the largest purple star sapphire of its kind. The gem shows a well-defined asterism. It has six rays asterism. That’s something special out of all the other stones."

Amarasinghe emphasized that the value of the stone has been estimated at USD 300 million to USD 400 million by international valuers.

The introduction marked the first public recognition of the gemstone within a structured framework, bringing together independent scientific verification, geological context, and long-term cultural perspective.
