Grade 1 admission : Govt to abolish points -system for house deeds

The Government is considering abolishing the points -system for house deeds granted during interviews held to enroll students to Grade 01 in state schools.

Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella mentioned this when revealing the cabinet decisions for the week to the media.

Twenty (20) points were granted for house deeds during interviews, but many parents are currently unable to provide house deeds to verify their registered address, he said.

Minister Rambukwella further said that as a result, a number of parents have failed to enroll their children.

Despite people living within the vicinity of certain schools for over 30 or 40-years, they are unable to enroll their children to the schools due to being unable to provide their house deeds.

The Minister of Education intends to abolish this system and issue a new circular on introducing a new system, he said.

Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that the cabinet of Ministers had directed attention to consider those whose names have been registered under one address for over 5 years on the voters list and if they are able to prove their registered address through documents from the Grama Niladhari and other related officers from their relevant areas
