Sumanthiran Criticizes Prime Minister's Rejection of Supreme Court's Order on IGP

MP M.A. Sumanthiran, PC expressed his views in Vavuniya on Saturday (27) regarding the Prime Minister's recent statement in Parliament, where he publicly refused to comply with the Supreme Court's directive concerning the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Addressing a gathering, Sumanthiran, who represents the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), recalled the Prime Minister's statement made outside of the parliamentary session.

"The Prime Minister's assertion that he will disregard the Supreme Court's decision is deeply troubling," said Sumanthiran. "If Deshabandu Tennakoon continues in his role as IGP despite the court's order, he may encounter substantial challenges."

Sumanthiran then challenged Tennakoon directly, urging him to provide a documented proof of his authority as the Inspector General of Police.

He emphasized the constitutional duty of the President to fulfill his obligations correctly, warning that any deviation from this responsibility would constitute a grave mistake.

Sumanthiran suggested appointing an Acting Inspector General of Police to the President, to maintain public trust and uphold legal standards effectively.
