Sri Lanka To Collaborate with Middle East to Extradite Fugitive Criminals
Sri Lanka's Inspector General of Police Deshbandu Tennakoon has revealed plans for a potential collaboration between law enforcement agencies in the Middle East and Sri Lanka to extradite fugitive criminals back to the country.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday (16) night in the south of the country, the police chief said that the Sri Lankan police force has made significant strides in recent months, leading to the arrest of approximately eight hundred individuals tied to criminal organizations.
He added that these groups have been severely weakened, with remaining members reduced to minor activities such as using posters for intimidation and making threatening calls.
Efforts to bring individuals involved in criminal activities back to Sri Lanka have escalated, with discussions initiated at the United Nations to facilitate the extradition process
Cooperation from the international community is expected to expedite the repatriation of suspects, particularly those hiding in the Middle East.
Furthermore, plans are underway to establish a specialized task force comprising top police officers from the Middle East and Sri Lanka to strengthen collaboration and enhance efficiency in handling such cases.
The IGP said that Sri Lanka's police force is pursuing additional suspects, with recent successes in extraditing two individuals and a growing list of high-priority targets on the horizon.
