Government Impersonation Scams on the Rise

The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) has issued a warning about a surge in financial fraud attempts where scammers are posing as government agencies.

According to Senior Engineer Charuka Damunupola, these scams involve emails containing fraudulent letters bearing the letterhead of government institutions.

The letters typically instruct recipients to make a payment.

He said that SLCERT has seen a significant increase in complaints about these scams in recent days.

SLCERT has recorded nearly 7,900 social media-related complaints in the past five months alone.

Financial fraud complaints account for a substantial portion of this figure, totaling 1,830.
