The University Grants Commission said the Ministry of Education has informed that the university non-academic staff cannot be given a salary increment this year.

UGC Chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunge said he was informed of the decision in writing on Thursday (13) afternoon.

He said all university vice-chancellors will be informed of the relevant decision on Friday (14).

Prof. Sampath Amaratunge said non-academic trade unions will be called for a discussion regarding the government's decision on Tuesday (18).

Friday (14) marks 44 days of the strike launched by university non-academic staff, based on several issues including salary disparities.

Activities of all state universities have been disrupted due to the ongoing strike.

University non-academic trade unions said they will not call off the strike until favourable solutions are provided to their demands.
