Sri Lankan Lecturer Arrested for False Claims on ISIS Arrests in India

The Criminal Investigation Department has arrested a lecturer attached to the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University for making false statements to media regarding the ISIS members arrested in India.

Police Spokesperson DIG Attorney-At-Law Nihal Thalduwa said the suspect will be produced in court on Wednesday (29).

On the 20th of May, four Sri Lankans were arrested by the Anti-Terrorism Squad of Gujarat at the Ahmedabad Airport for suspected ISIS links.

The Police Spokesperson said the lecturer recently stated to media that the Easter Sunday Attacks Commission report recommends that the men be directed to rehabilitation.

DIG Nihal Thalduwa said when the CID summoned the lecturer for questioning, he said he was unaware of the relevant details, and thus was arrested.

The CID has arrested two people in Bangadeniya, Chilaw for their alleged links with ISIS members.

Security forces said investigations conducted so far have not confirmed that the two are ISIS members.

Sri Lankan security forces suspect that an individual by the name of Osmand Gerrard acted as a handler of the four Sri Lankan men who were arrested in India, for suspected links with ISIS.

Sri Lanka Police recently announced a cash award of Rs.2 Million, for any credible information on the whereabouts of the wanted suspect.

Sri Lanka Police revealed that the wanted suspect Osmand Gerrard often changes his appearances.

The 46-year-old man is a resident of Dematagoda.

According to detectives, the two men arrested in Chilaw, are the younger siblings of Osmand Gerrard.
