UGC requests striking university non-academic staff to return to work

The University Grants Commission has requested members of striking non-academic trade unions to report to work and support the commencement of academic activities at universities.

UGC Chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunge said he informed them of the government's stance regarding the demands of non-academic staff, including salaries and allowances.

He said disrupting the university system until the demands are met will delay the graduation of around 150,000 students.

However, Co-Chairman of the University Trade Union Joint Committee Dhammika S. Priyantha said appointing committees instead of providing solutions to their demands is of no use.

He said accordingly the university non-academic staff strike will continue for a 28th day.
