Sri Lanka warns fishermen of Somali pirate risk in Arabian Sea
The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has warned Sri Lankan fisherfolk against venturing into the Arabian Sea for poaching activities.
This warning comes in light of reports of an armed Somali group hijacking an Iranian fishing vessel in the Arabian Sea.
The Sri Lankan Navy has informed that the international sea area 700 nautical miles east of the Somali Sea region is at a high risk level for piracy.
Taking this situation into account, the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources advises multi-day fishing vessels to operate east of the Arabian Sea, as far away from the currently designated high-risk zone as possible.
