Hydropower generation drops by 10% due to dry spell

The generation of hydropower has dropped by about 10% due to the prevailing dry weather.

Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Energy Sulakshana Jayawardena said that hydropower generation is usually maintained at 30%.

However, it has now been reduced by about 20%.

This is to manage water for consumption and cultivation.

The Ministry of Power and Energy said the daily electricity consumption has also risen to about 50 gigawatt hours.

It is typically recorded at 43 gigawatt hours on an average day.
