Salinity Barrier Across Kelani River; Water Board urges public to use water sparingly due to dry weather
Concerned about declining water levels due to dry weather, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (WSDB) announced plans to construct a salinity barrier across the Kelani river.
"Preliminary work" on the barrier is already underway, according to Deputy General Manager Engineer Anoja Kaluarachchi.
However, she emphasized that "water distribution will continue using the existing water capacity" for the time being.
The announcement comes amid concerns about the impact of prolonged dry weather on Sri Lanka's water resources.
Kaluarachchi pointed out that "water consumption has increased" due to these conditions, prompting the NWSDB to urge consumers to "use water sparingly."
