The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) deploys officers to monitor the warehouses of sugar importers.

The CAA has received reports on the stocks of imported sugar and the quantities released to the market.

Based on these reports, it is estimated that approximately 19,891 metric tons of sugar are currently available in imported warehouses.

This stock is sufficient to meet the country's consumption needs for about two months.

The CAA has also advised all sugar importers to release their sugar stocks to the market at the controlled price.

However, complaints have been received that sugar is being sold in the market at prices above the controlled price.

In response, the CAA is conducting raids to identify and take action against those who are violating price regulations.

The sugar shortage in the market arose when the Ministry of Finance increased the tax on imported sugar from 25 cents per kilogram to Rs. 50 per kilogram, effective from the first of this month.

To prevent an increase in the price of sugar that had already been imported, the Ministry of Finance imposed a higher retail price for sugar through a special gazette notification.

According to the notification, the maximum retail price of a kilogram of unpacked white sugar is Rs. 275 and a kilogram of unpacked brown sugar is Rs. 330.
