Sugar crisis looms - traders need USD 18 million
Sugar importers say they have not yet received the dollars needed to end the sugar shortages in the market.
A spokesman said that the Central Bank was expected to intervene to resolve the issue.
At present there are about 200 unloaded sugar containers in the Port of Colombo.
The importers had earlier demanded USD 18 million from the government to import sugar.
It is reported that they asked for this amount to import 30,000 metric tons of sugar which is required for at least a month.
However, despite the government imposing a control price of 122 rupees for white sugar and 125 rupees for brown sugar, some traders have been selling sugar at higher prices.
