Only two political camps in country - Imthiaz
There are only two political camps in the country now, one is pro-democratic and the other anti-democratic, said Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, joining the debate on 20th Amendment to the Constitution in Parliament yesterday.
“The Constitution is the fountain of democracy. This democracy is the one that shields the ordinary.
These amendments to the Constitution will neutralize the Independent Commissions. I was reminded of the Wayamba election when I saw these amendments. Police were used to inflict violence. No such incidents happened owing to the Independent Commissions. These amendments will create an imbalance in the independence of the judiciary. I was reminded of late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s speech criticizing the 1978 Constitution brought by late President J.R.Jayewardene,” MP Markar pointed out. MP Markar also said, “Any lay person given unprecedented power is doomed to be 0corrupt. So there are only two camps in our country now. One camp supports democracy and fights to ensure the rights of the people. The other camp relies upon tribal politics which promotes a dictatorial rule.”
