Govt. confident 20A will be adopted in Parliament with 2/3 majority - GL
The Government is confident that the 20th Amendment to the Constitution will be adopted in Parliament with a 2/3 majority at the Second Reading of the Bill, said Education Minister Prof. G L Peiris.
He said that the Government will definitely receive a 2/3 majority at the Third Reading after the Committee Stage debate on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.
The Education Minister said the government has agreed for the allocation ten hours additionally for the debate on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution
Addressing a press conference at the SLPP headquarters yesterday, Peiris said the proposed Amendment will be debated in Parliament on October 21–22 and the debate will continue upto 7.30 p.m.
The final vote on the Constitutional Amendment is expected to be taken by 7.30 p.m. on October 21.
Minister Prof. Peiris added that the Yahapalana Government allocated only two days for the 19th Amendment to the Constitution and the Government decided to allocate two days for the 20th Amendment to the Constitution too.
He said that if the Supreme Court has made any recommendations regarding the Constitutional Amendment, that would be brought as an amendment proposed by the Government at the Committee Stage.
