Carcinogens present in coconut oil – Wijeyadasa

Parliamentarian Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, issuing a statement said, during tests conducted on 55 samples of coconut oil obtained by the Consumer Affairs Authority from the market, covering all twenty-five districts, there were samples that contained dangerous levels of carcinogens.

Dr. Rajapakshe said, of the 55 samples tested, there was an extremely dangerous level of 17.9 particles of a carcinogen contained in some of them.

He said according to the testing method used, if there are over 10 Aflatoxin particles in a billion coconut oil particles, it poses a serious risk to the human body.

He added that among the samples tested, there were six samples which exceeded the Aflatoxin value of 10 and 14 which exceeded the value of five. There had been eight samples which did not contain Aflatoxin at all.

In his statement, Dr. Rajapakshe said, speaking to the Media on 1 April, Director General of the Coconut Development Authority, M.L.D. Niroshana, falsely claimed that the samples did not contain Aflatoxin which was harmful to the human body and encouraged the public to consume coconut oil containing carcinogens and this is an attempt to destroy human life.

Dr. Rajapakshe said it was clear that the above-mentioned samples had not been obtained from imported Crude Coconut Oil, but from coconut oil which has been distributed throughout the country and can be obtained from retail shops. He added that consuming coconut oil available in the market is dangerous.
