Security beefed up for Easter Sunday

Security has been beefed up for Easter Sunday and over 3,000 additional STF, Police, and Tri-Forces have been deployed around the country, said Minister of Public Security, Rear Admiral (Retired) Sarath Weerasekara.

"They will be deployed at all churches around the country to give devotees the confidence that security was prime" he added.

Easter Sunday witnessed carnage two years ago and the fear still exists when Easter Sunday nears.

The Minister said Intelligence authorities have not received any disturbing reports and thus confirmed that there was no security threat in the country.

Easter Sunday in 2019 saw over 250 people, mostly Christians being killed, when a group of Islamic extremist suicide bombers targeted churches and hotels in Sri Lanka.

Security has been beefed up in the North and East.

The Army has been deployed from Tuesday (30) and they are conducting operations around churches in the Batticaloa District.
