Arjun Kapoor’s Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar which finally had a theatrical release today after several years of delay, is a black comedy. The actor, who often displays his dry sense of humour on social media, is looking for an out-and-out comedy film to work in. He’s hoping to be able to show his funny side in upcoming film Bhoot Police.

In Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar, Arjun (Pinkesh Kumar Dahiya, nicknamed Pinky) is a Haryanvi cop in the Mahipalpur area of NCR, while Parineeti Chopra (Sandeep Kaur) is a corporate woman on the run. In a conversation with News18, the actor talked about the waiting period before theatres opened and how he got into the skin of his character.

Did the delay in release of Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar lead to anxieties as an actor?

When you have a lockdown, I think you’re not so impatient or anxious for the film, you’re more anxious about finding clarity in life. But yes, you do want the film to come out in theaters. So the anxiety is, when will it come out? How will it come out where people can see it? I think those are very natural tendencies and emotions. You also tend to, to worry if ever, because of the pandemic, we all wondered if we will ever get to see a film in a theater. But I’m really happy that that journey has been fulfilled.

How did you learn the Haryanvi dialect and the body language of Pinky?

The most interesting part of playing Pinky was that Dibakar sir (Banerjee, director) and I went into breaking me down and finding Pinky Dahiya in that process. The dialect came from Dibakar sir coming home and sitting with me for a couple of months and talking to me everyday, where he would just refer to me and say, ‘Aur Pinky bata kya ho raha hai?’ in that accent. We would have conversations like that for months. The body language came because we spent a month in Delhi meeting cops and people who work in those areas of Mahipalpur and spending time understanding their personal and professional space.

Audiences like to watch you and Parineeti together. What should they expect from this film?

If they liked Ishaqzaade they will enjoy Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. They should expect two very good performances and a story that is very relevant to India today.

We’ve seen your witty side on Instagram, do we see you in a full on comedy film anytime soon?

I have been looking for an out-and-out comedy for a while. Bhoot Police has major shades of humour and I’m hoping that that fulfills and satiates some part of my humour-driven life.

How has life changed post the pandemic?

Tremendously. In so many ways, you have gone back to being normal. But the new normal I guess is that you have be more aware. You maintain social distancing for the right reasons, you don’t need to get out all the time. You value the people and work in your life more. You value your core group of people that you really would like to interact with rather than just being out in public all the time. Being alone is not as scary for most people. I have always enjoyed being alone. But workwise I think you also realize the kind of work you want to do. There has to be a good reason to step out of the house.
