Military bus struck by train in Kelaniya, 12 deaths due to accidents in 24- hours
A military bus was struck by a train at the Wanawasala railway crossing in Kelaniya today.
The train plying from Kandy to Colombo, Fort had struck the bus, which had ended up crashing on to a house nearby.
Three people in the house who were injured as a result of the accident have been hospitalized.
The rear end of the bus has been severely damaged, while the glass pane of the train engine had sustained minor damages in the accident that occurred at 09.35 am today.
Meanwhile, the Police have warned of a significant increase in accidents in Sri Lanka.
Police Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said 12 deaths due to accidents were reported in the 24-hours ending at 06 am yesterday (28).
He said eight individuals had died after sustaining injuries in accidents reported the day before (27).
The remaining four had died from injuries sustained in accidents reported during the beginning of the week.
Four pedestrians, four passengers of three- wheelers, two cyclists, and another two individuals are among the victims.
DIG Ajith Rohana said there was a significant increase in accidents at present due to the negligence of drivers and pedestrians as well.
He said a special motor traffic operation will be launched in the future to curtail road accidents in the country
