Waste-to-Energy project to commence today
The work of the project to generate electricity from the solid waste brought to Kerawalapitiya will commence this morning under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
This is a joint venture between the Colombo Municipal Council, Western Power Pvt. Ltd. and the Ceylon Electricity Board to generate 10 megawatts of electricity per day.
This power plant burns about 800 metric tons of non-perishable waste per day and converts it into electricity.
Director of the Western Provincial Waste Management Authority Nalin Mannapperuma stated that the garbage problem in Colombo and its suburbs will be solved through this.
