Suspect arrested with 1,500kg of turmeric
A suspect was arrested with nearly 1,500 kilograms of turmeric hidden in the Pallivasalthurai, Kalpitiya. According to intelligence received, the raid was carried out by the Puttalam Divisional Narcotics Unit this morning (07).
It is said that the turmeric consignment was brought from India and hidden near the coast for transportation.
The value of the turmeric stock which was packed in 50 bags was over Rs. 7.5 million.
The suspect arrested in connection with the incident is a resident of Madurankuliya, Mundalama.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the turmeric consignment was brought to the country using fishing vessels in violation of quarantine laws.
The arrested suspect and the stock of turmeric are to be handed over to the Kalpitiya Police for further investigations
