Risk of sewage directly being added to groundwater

The Ministry of Water Supply states that the quality of groundwater in urban areas has deteriorated due to the addition of various pollutants including sewage.

The Minister in charge of the subject Vasudeva Nanayakkara stated that if a quick solution cannot be found for this, serious problems could arise for the drinking water consumption in the country.

He said this while participating in a workshop held to formulate a national waste management policy.

The Minister further said that researchers have found that about 90% of the sewage is directly added to the groundwater.

Accordingly, in the future, steps will be taken to introduce a systematic waste disposal programme at the design stage of houses, factories and hotels, he noted
