Teachers Union condemns prominent girl’s school Principal’s decision to reject male teacher
The Ceylon Teachers Service Union has condemned the actions of the Principal of a prominent girl’s school in Colombo.
The Principal has been accused of preventing a male teacher from assuming duties under a transfer order approved by the Education Ministry Secretary.
She is further reported to have thrown the letter of appointment on the teacher’s face and had later ordered school security officials to forcefully remove the man from the school’s premises.
According to newspaper reports, the principal has refused to accept the appointment on the basis that a male teacher cannot teach Sinhala literature in her school.
Pointing out that the principal had violated the direct orders of the Education Ministry Secretary, the Ceylon Teachers Service Union called on the latter to enforce the legal transfer of the teacher.
The Union further said in the event the Education Ministry Secretary fails to provide a just solution to the affected teacher, all Teachers Unions will withdraw from the Government Teachers Association of Sri Lanka.
