28 containers of agriculture waste: Future action regarding containers discussed

Sri Lanka Customs has seized 28 containers of agriculture waste imported from Ukraine.

Preliminary investigations have confirmed that the items were imported under the guise of importing coriander.

Eight of these 28 containers were imported on 10 December and the other 20 containers were imported on 21 December.

It is reported that a leading company in Ukraine, which certifies the quality of agricultural products, has also issued a certificate for these 28 containers.

The officials of the Central Environmental Authority who inspected four of these containers stated that the waste should be re-exported to the same country.

Among these, 24 are at the Colombo Port premises and the remaining 4 are stored at the Sri Lanka Customs Container Inspection Yard.

Explaining this, Customs Media Spokesman Additional Director of Customs Sunil Jayaratne said that steps will be taken to re-export the containers to the relevant country as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, 242 containers containing clinical waste had been imported from England to Sri Lanka and 120 of them have already been re-exported to England.
