Sri Lanka's importers and exporters are facing severe difficulties due to the shortage of containers in view of the prevailing coronavirus pandemic.
Importers and exporters point out that container rental rates have also tripled thus far.
Sean Van Dort, President of the Global Shipping Association, said in a statement that although the coronavirus pandemic had some effect on container vessels being stranded in some countries, shipowners have taken advantage of the situation to create an artificial shortage of containers and thereby creating an artificial container shortage.
