Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is being considered for SL - Dr. Fernandopulle
Addressing the media following her inspection of the Bandaranaike International Airport, Primary Health Services, Epidemiology and COVID-19 State Minister Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle stated that they are currently conducting research into the COVID vaccines available in the market.
She noted that discussions are being held regarding the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Oxford-AstraZeneca, but remarked that although vaccinations are being carried out in other countries proper exchange of scientific information and data regarding the vaccines are yet to take place.
She stated that research and studies are being conducted to provide the best possible option for the people of Sri Lanka.
Speaking regarding the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, she commented that the Phase III trials were completed, but it is yet to be known the period of time in which the vaccine offers the protection against the coronavirus. She also stated that when administering, two doses of Sputnik V must be given.
The State Minister stated that if vaccinated, one must be vaccinated against the virus at least once a year, as it does not offer a lifetime of immunity as measles or any other vaccine.
When discussing regarding the vaccines that are suitable for Sri Lanka, the Oxford-AstraZeneca is being considered stated the subject minister as the storing, transport temperatures of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are not suitable with the tropical temperatures.
