Is incurred loss due to Mahara Prison unrest Rs 100M?
A senior official with the Prison Department stated the expected loss following to the unrest at the Mahara Prison where inmates set several buildings at the Prison on fire, is Rs. 100 million.
While the assessment report regarding the damage is being prepared, a number of necessary documents were also reported to be destroyed by the fire. Following the unrest at the Mahara Prison, 11 inmates were killed, out of which eight of them were identified by their relatives.
Eight persons among the deceased were diagnosed with COVID-19 following their death. Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana stated that the decision regarding what will be done to the bodies will be taken by the Court.
Meanwhile, another inmate is currently being treated at the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo North Teaching Hospital in Ragama.
DIG Ajith Rohana further stated that a team of 25 Criminal Investigation Department officials are conducting further investigation into the incident as it was reported that the clash was allegedly a sabotage operation.
