Seasonal Rainfall Forecast for December 2020 issued by met department

Seasonal forecasting Division of the Department of Meteorology states that above-normal rainfalls are likely during the December 2020   February 2021 (DJF) season over most part of the country particularly in Northern, Eastern, Uva and North central provinces.

However, the predictability is also limited due to strong day-to-day atmospheric variability caused by the passage of the synoptic scale systems such as lows, depressions and cyclones which are more common in December as well as intraseasonal Oscillations such as Madden Julian Oscillations.

According to the available rainfall data in Department of Meteorology, near or slightly above normal rainfalls were observed in Northern and Northwestern provinces and in Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Galle, Matara and Rathnapura districts and below normal rainfalls over rest of the country (Fig. 4) during the month of November 2020.
