The prevailing rainy and windy conditions over the southwestern parts of Sri Lanka are expected to intensify from today (06) and continue for the next few days, due to the active southwest monsoon, according to the Department of Meteorology. 

As such, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces and the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts today. Cloudy skies will prevail over these areas.

Heavy falls above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya and Galle districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Ampara, Batticaloa, and Monaragala districts after 2.00 pm.

Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph can be expected at times over the North-central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-western provinces.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. 

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be westerly to south-westerly. Wind speed will be 30-40 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 60-70 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota Via Colombo, and Galle.

The sea areas off the coasts extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough or very rough at times. Naval and fishing communities are advised not to venture into these sea areas, until further notice.
