England considering single-Test Sri Lanka tour in future FTPs

England could reduce future Test tours to Sri Lanka to a single match under proposed changes to the international cricket calendar, according to a report by The Guardian.

The report said the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is considering a revised scheduling approach for the next Future Tours Programme (FTP), with plans to host more five-Test series at home while limiting some overseas tours to one-off Tests.

According to the report, future England tours to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh could comprise a single Test match combined with white-ball fixtures, which are considered more commercially viable for host boards.

The proposed changes are linked to planned reforms to the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Test Championship (WTC), which is expected to expand to all 12 Test-playing nations.

Under the new format being discussed, one-off Test matches could be included in the WTC for the first time. Previously, a minimum two-Test series was required for championship status.

The Guardian reported that the ECB is supporting the one-Test model, arguing that it would create more opportunities for smaller cricketing nations while helping protect the Test format.

The report also stated that England is looking to increase the number of five-Test home series against major teams such as South Africa and Pakistan in the coming years.

The ICC board is expected to discuss the proposed WTC reforms later this month, according to the report.
