Former Intelligence Chief Suresh Salley Held on 72‑Hour Detention Order

Retired Major General Suresh Salley, former head of the State Intelligence Service who was arrested in connection with investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks, is currently being questioned under a 72‑hour detention order.

Police Spokesperson ASP F. U. Wootler said Salley was taken into custody at 7:50 a.m. today at the Peliyagoda Police Division.

“At 7:50 this morning, former State Intelligence Service Director Major General Suresh Salley was arrested at the Peliyagoda Police Division. The arrest was made based on clear evidence uncovered during the ongoing investigations into the Easter attacks. The suspect will be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department for further inquiries.”

Salley was arrested by a team from the Criminal Investigation Department early this morning (25) in Peliyagoda.

At the time of the Easter Sunday attacks on 21 April 2019, he was serving as an adviser at the Sri Lankan High Commission in Malaysia, having previously served as Director of Army Intelligence.

Police said the arrest was made based on independent evidence. Retired Major General Suresh Salley is currently being held at the CID under the 72‑hour detention order for further investigation.
