“Misuse Power and Face Consequences” - IGP
Sri Lanka's Police Chief Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya has urged officers to uphold integrity and avoid abusing the authority vested in them.
Speaking at a ceremonial passing-out parade for 314 newly appointed police officers at the Pahalagama Police Academy grounds yesterday evening, Weerasuriya emphasized that the powers granted to police are far greater than those given to other public servants — and must be exercised solely for the public good.
“If you misuse these powers, you will inevitably face the consequences,” warned Weerasuriya, while stressing the importance of discipline and accountability within the force.
The Police Chief acknowledged the existence of “subcultures” within police stations — some fostering commendable crime-solving and dedication, while others enabling corruption and misconduct.
He revealed that approximately 500 officers have already faced disciplinary action for involvement in narcotics or other serious offenses, with some being dismissed after confirmation of wrongdoing.
Sri Lanka Police, he noted, is grappling with major challenges, including organized crime networks and drug trafficking, sometimes aided by rogue officers.
The force currently faces a shortage of 31,000 personnel, expected to rise to 40,000 within three years. To address this, recruitment of 10,000 new officers has already commenced this year.
Weerasuriya called on every officer to perform their duties lawfully and diligently to create a peaceful, law-abiding society.
