
Leptospirosis Risk Rises In 12 Districts
The risk of leptospirosis has increased in 12 districts.
The Epidemiology Unit said that Galle, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matara, Hambantota, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Badulla, Gampaha, and Monaragala have been identified as high-risk areas for the spread of leptospirosis.
With the start of farming activities for the Maha season, the risk of leptospirosis spreading is expected to rise further.
A national steering committee has been appointed to control the situation.
Epidemiologist Dr. Thushani Dabarera from the Epidemiology Unit said that nearly 8,000 leptospirosis cases were reported during the past year.
The Epidemiology Unit advised those engaged in farming to obtain antibiotics from public health inspectors or Medical Officer of Health offices to protect themselves from leptospirosis.
