AKD’s Pick for New IGP To Constitutional Council

AKD’s Pick for New IGP To Constitutional Council

The Constitutional Council is scheduled to convene today (7) at 1:30 PM under the chairmanship of Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne to consider the President’s recommendation for the appointment of a new Inspector General of Police (IGP), following the official removal of Deshabandu Tennakoon from the post.

The Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security confirmed that the formal letter of removal was handed over to Tennakoon, marking the end of his tenure as IGP.

This follows a decisive vote in Parliament, where the proposal to remove him was passed with overwhelming support — 177 votes in favor and none against.

Subsequently, the Speaker forwarded the removal letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who has since signed off on the decision.

The President’s nominee for the now-vacant position is expected to be submitted to the Constitutional Council during today’s session.
