SC to Sentence Ex-Immigration Chief on Sept 23

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has scheduled September 23 as the date to deliver its sentencing order in the contempt of court case against Harsha Ilukpitiya, the former Controller General of the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Ilukpitiya faces charges of contempt of court for allegedly failing to comply with an interim order issued by the Supreme Court regarding the electronic visa issuance process. The court had previously issued a directive to halt certain actions related to the implementation of the e-visa system, which Ilukpitiya is accused of disregarding.

During a recent hearing, Ilukpitiya unconditionally admitted guilt, formally withdrawing his earlier plea of not guilty.

Taking his statement into consideration, the Supreme Court initially planned to announce the sentencing today. However, the bench has now decided to postpone the ruling to September 23.
