Naval exercise suspected to be the reason behind Pandura whale stranding

An investigation conducted by environmentalists has revealed that the recent incident where a pod of whales has been beached at the Pandura Coast was due to a joint Naval exercise conducted by several countries in the Indian Ocean.

Nearly 100 whales have been beached on the Panadura Coast on 02 November afternoon, and around 10 whales had died.

The operation was carried out jointly with the Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Police Ministry of Fisheries, Department of Wildlife Conservation as well as many non-government organisations and volunteers.

Environmentalist Nayanaka Ranwella stated that the whales were stranded on the beach as sonar communication between the animals has been disrupted due to the Malabar Naval exercise conducted by countries including India, Australia, Japan, and the United States.
