Sri Lanka's President Dissolves Parliament and Announces Election Dates
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has exercised his constitutional powers to dissolve the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
This decision, effective from midnight on 24th September, was made under Article 70 of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and in accordance with Section 10 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981.
The President has set the date for the election of new Members of Parliament for November 14, 2024.
The newly elected Parliament is scheduled to convene on November 21, 2024.
The nomination period for candidates will commence on October 4, 2024, and conclude at noon on October 11, 2024.
During this period, nomination papers will be accepted by the Returning Officers at designated locations specified in the official schedule.
