Marine Resources in Sea of Sri Lanka Threatened by Bottom Trawling - NARA

The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) has highlighted the threat posed by bottom trawling by Indian fishermen to the marine resources in the Sea of Sri Lanka.

NARA Director Ganapathypillai Arulanandan said this destructive fishing method is causing significant damage to Sri Lanka's marine ecosystems, particularly in the North Sea.

He pointed to a 50% decline in fish harvest compared to 2015. He attributed this decrease to the destruction of coral reefs and seaweed beds – vital breeding grounds for fish – caused by bottom trawling.

He also acknowledged the challenges faced by Sri Lankan authorities in controlling illegal bottom trawling activities.

Arulanandan urged stricter enforcement measures and international cooperation to address this issue and safeguard marine resources in the Sea of Sri Lanka.
