20 garbage filled containers to be repatriated to the UK on Friday

Sri Lanka Customs said 20 Freight Containers with waste material that were lying inside the Colombo Port will be repatriated on Friday (3) to the United Kingdom.

Another 65 Freight Containers with waste material will be repatriated on 04th of November, said Sri Lanka Customs.

Earlier, the Consumer Protection Unit of Sri Lanka Customs detected 112 Freight Containers with waste material imported from the United Kingdom and were at the Colombo Port Premises.

Further Investigations revealed another 130 Freight Containers with waste material were already imported into Sri Lanka under the Hub Regulations.

The Sri Lankan Court of Appeal on the 14th of October ordered the Central Environment Authority to send all 242 freight containers with garbage which were shipped to Sri Lanka, back to the United Kingdom.

The Court of Appeal announced the verdict concluding the examination of the petition filed by the Centre for Environmental Justice.

The matter was examined by Court of Appeal President H. M. D. Nawaz and Justice Sobitha Rajakaruna and the bench ordered for legal action be instituted against all establishments involved in shipping those freight containers to Sri Lanka.
