Prison Deaths in Sri Lanka: Suicides, Medical Conditions, and Assaults Cause Concern!
Sri Lanka's prisons have seen a troubling rise in inmate deaths this year, with nearly 50 fatalities attributed to suicides, medical conditions, and assaults.
Prison Spokesperson, Gamini B. Dissanayake, noted the significantly higher death toll compared to last year, which saw 209 deaths.
Dissanayake also highlighted the prevalence of suicide within the prison system, with 17 reported cases in 2023.
There are 3 foreign nationals among the deceased.
