Power Bills Spared from VAT in January, But Fuel Prices Brace for Impact.
Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera assures that the upcoming January electricity tariff revision will not be affected by the Value Added Tax (VAT) increase.
However, fuel prices are likely to bear the brunt of the tax hike, prompting discussions on alternative measures to cushion the blow.
Addressing concerns about the impact of VAT on household expenses, Minister Wijesekera clarified that the January electricity bill revision will proceed as planned without incorporating the increased tax.
Despite the VAT-induced price hike concerns, the Minister emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring adequate fuel supplies throughout the country.
He pledged to prevent any recurrence of the fuel shortages that plagued Sri Lanka earlier this year.
