Nilwala River nearing flood level.

The Department of Irrigation said water levels of the Nilwala River has risen due to the prevailing showers.

Director of Irrigation (Hydrology & Disaster Management) S.P.C. Sugeeshwara said as a result there is a risk of flooding in the low lying areas of the Nilwala River

He said there is a risk of flooding in the Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Malimbada, Matara, Thihagoda and Kadduwa-Athuraliya Divisional Secretariats.

In the latest weather update the Department of Meteorology predicted showers or thundershowers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

The Department added that several spells of showers may occur elsewhere over the country.

The Met. Department also predicted strong winds of about 40-45kmph over the island.
