Heavy showers island wide - Baduluoya overflows (Video)
The Meteorological Department states that heavy showers exceeding 100 mm will occur in many parts of the island in the next few days due to the inter monsoonal weather and the low pressure area prevailing near the island.
Meanwhile, the Badulu Oya has overflowed due to heavy rains that fell in the Badulla area yesterday (29) afternoon.
The Disaster Management Center stated that the body of a person who had gone missing had been found.
Badulla District Assistant Director of Disaster Management E.M.L. Udaya Kumara stated that about 210 houses have been damaged due to the inclement weather and many families have been affected.
Also, several government institutions were inundated due to the overflowing of the Badulu Oya.
Our correspondent stated that due to a landslide in the Demodara area traffic on the Badulla and Bandarawela main roads and several other roads in those areas were disrupted for several hours.
However, the water level of the Badulu Oya has gone down, said Badulla District Assistant Director of Disaster Management.
Meanwhile, the Nuwara Eliya Disaster Management Unit stated that the Keselgamu Oya flowing into the Castlereagh Reservoir has overflowed due to heavy rains that fell in the western slopes of the central hills yesterday (29) afternoon.
Three sluice gates of the Upper Kotmale Reservoir were opened yesterday (29) afternoon and now two gates have been closed.
However, several other low lying areas in Nuwara Eliya and Kadapola were inundated yesterday (29).
Meanwhile 03 sluice gates have been opened in the Laxapana reservoir as well.
Our correspondents stated that the bridge across the Mahaweli River in the Nawalapitiya - Weligampola area had collapsed due to the rains and about a thousand people from 10 villages have been affected.
Also, several places in Colombo were inundated due to heavy rains this morning (30).
The highest rainfall of 215 mm was recorded in the Norochcholai area during the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am today (30).
Meanwhile, the Director General of the Meteorological Department Athula Karunanayake stated that showers or thundershowers will occur in many parts of the island this afternoon (30) due to the persistence of the low pressure area located around Sri Lanka.
