Nearly 100,000 sterile male dengue mosquitoes released in Gampaha
A special initiative was launched to release 100,000 sterile male dengue mosquitoes to the environment at Kidagammulla in Gampaha yesterday.
The project was conducted in order to curtail the breeding of dengue mosquitoes.
The initiative was based on years of research carried out by the Medical Faculty of Kelaniya University and the National Dengue Prevention Unit.
Director of the National Dengue Prevention Unit Dr. Aruna Jayasaekara said the release of sterile dengue mosquitoes was a landmark event in the dengue prevention campaign in Sri Lanka.
He explained that the breeding of dengue mosquitoes could be prevented by sterilizing the male mosquitoes.
Dr. Jayasekera added that the project implemented by the Kelaniya Medical Faculty augurs well for the country’s dengue prevention campaign
