The leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe will take over the Parliamentary seat for the National List Member of Parliament allocated to the UNP by the first week of next month, party sources said.

The UNP has decided to nominate party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for the parliamentary seat and is reportedly awaiting the approval of the party leadership.

The party will be informed of the decision by the end of this month.

In the general election held last August, the UNP did not win any seats and only secured one solitary National List seat.

The Working Committee met several times to make a final decision, but they ended without a consensus, Several names were initially proposed for the National List seat.
