Plans to increase onion harvest by 60%

The Ministry of Agriculture plans to make the country self-sufficient through a productive economy.

The Minister in charge of the subject Mahindananda Aluthgamage has instructed the officials at the monthly progress review meeting of the institutions under the Ministry of Agriculture to carry out their duties with the objective of making the country self-sufficient in a productive economy.

Meanwhile, 22% of the country's onion requirement is produced while the remainder is imported.

The Ministry of Agriculture stated that the Minister has instructed the officials to increase the onion harvest to 35% this year and to increase it to 60% by 2023 due to the annual expenditure of Rs 12 to 15 billion for the importation of onions.
