'Lower student turnout in WP due to fear among parents'

Ceylon Teachers' Union (CTU) General Secretary Joesph Stalin stated that in an effort to increase the student turnover in schools in Western Province, the Government should provide free face masks and conduct random rapid antigen tests and PCR tests in schools.

Since the re-opening of schools in the Western Province yesterday (25) for students sitting for General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level), the student turnout was recorded at 40%. The lower student turnout percentage was attributed to the fear among parents.

While schools should be conducted adhering to health guidelines, providing free face masks and carrying out random tests can build trust among the parents.

The General Secretary pointed out that recently a group of students at the Passara Central College tested positive during a random test conducted at the school. He noted that carrying out the same process in the Western Province, where there is a higher risk of COVID-19 could be safe for all.
