Sluice gates of Parakrama Samudraya open
Two sluice gates of the Parakrama Samudraya have been opened with heavy rains falling in the Polonnaruwa district.
The Polonnaruwa Irrigation Director's Office says that the reservoir is filling up rapidly due to heavy rains.
According to the Office of the Director of Irrigation, one sluice gate discharges 280 cubic feet of water per second.
It is also reported that at present the water level of the reservoir is close to one hundred and ten thousand acre feet.
It is further pointed out that with the opening of the sluice gates, the Gallella area in Polonnaruwa and the Gallella-Manampitiya on the Polonnaruwa-Batticaloa main road are likely to be flooded.
Polonnaruwa Zonal Director of Irrigation S Hewagama says that it is also important for the people living near the Amban river to be vigilant in this regard.
