Health Services DG orders body of Covid victim from Galle to be cremated
Director General of Health Services Dr Asela Gunawardene has advised the Galle police to cremate the body of a Muslim Covid victim from the area in line with the Government circular issued on the disposal of Covid infected bodies.
According to media reports, earlier, the Galle Magistrate’s Court had ordered to keep the remains of the Covid victim until further advice from Health Authorities.
The Health Services Director in a letter addressed to the Galle Police ordered the latter to dispose the body after informing the Court of his instructions.
He further issued a separate clarification to all hospital authorities regarding his letter to Justice Minister Ali Sabry on the matter.
Dr Asela Gunawardene said his letter to the Justice Minister was an official communication on the storing of unclaimed bodies of Muslim Covid victims and request to provide cold containers for this purpose.
Stating that his letter had been misinterpreted by many as an official circular, he said it was only a letter of request for cold containers to store the bodies.
Dr. Gunawardena further said it has no effect on mandatory cremation applied for COVID 19 victims in Sri Lanka and that cremation will be the process followed at present. (NewsWire)
