Legal action against all inmates responsible for Mahara prison riot
The Department of Prisons will institute legal action against all inmates who are connected to the Mahara Prison riot, prison officials said on Wednesday (Dec. 02).
The identity of 25 of those responsible was already ascertained, and measures are underway to identify the other inmates behind the prison riot, Thushara Upuldeniya, the Commissioner-General of Prisons said on Wednesday (Dec. 02).
He said, property at the premises was severely damaged after being set on fire during the riot and the extent of the damage is being assessed.
According to the Prisons Commissioner, the security at the prison complex was ensured by yesterday and 2500 inmates are currently detained at the Mahara Prison.
